7 Simple Tips on Saving Energy in Your Kitchen

The kitchen is one of the most important places in our homes. It is, after all, where we store and prepare the food and drink we need to survive.

The kitchen is also full of appliances that have the potential to consume a lot of energy. And as we already know, inefficient energy use can lead to higher electricity bills—not to mention it contributes to the deterioration of our planet’s health.

Fortunately, there are proven ways to make your kitchen more energy-efficient. Here are some of them:

1. As much as possible, use the microwave instead of the oven. Microwaves use less energy because they can cook food three times more quickly than the average oven.

2. If you need to inspect the food your oven is cooking, turn on the oven light. Don’t open the oven door, as this will allow the heat to escape, which prolongs the cooking time.

3. Ensure the pans and pots you use are the right size for the burner. You waste energy every time you use a large pot on a small burner, or the reverse.

4. Your refrigerator works nonstop to prevent your consumables from perishing, so it’s crucial it does its job efficiently. Set its temperature to between 37.4 and 41 degrees Fahrenheit, and the freezer’s between 5 and -0.4 degrees Fahrenheit. These temperatures are ideal for an energy-efficient fridge.

5. Clean the fridge’s condenser coils so they function efficiently and waste the least amount of energy possible.

6. Don’t store rotten or unwanted perishables in your fridge; energy will just go to waste preserving them.

7. Position the fridge in a well-ventilated area, preferably away from heat sources. Heat sources like direct sunlight can make the fridge work extra hard (and thus use more energy) to preserve your perishables.
